Overview

In October 2015, a formerly abandoned property was ambitiously transformed into a vast floral art installation - every room, from floor to ceiling, filled with fresh, American-grown plants and flowers. Created and led by floral designer and contemporary artist Lisa Waud, Flower House was brought to life with the help of floral designers from across the continent and provided an immersive and transformative experience for visitors, neighbors, volunteers, and the surrounding community.

“Like a vibrant lining inside a shabby winter coat, Flower House offered the appeal of unexpected contrast. Visitors peered into closets, porches, balconies and rooms, where curls of peeling paint suddenly seem voluptuously petal-like.” – The Washington Post

Book Design

The task seemed simple - design a book about Flower House. I quickly came to realize it would be anything but easy. The project had never been about design; rather it was about recreating a once immersive, emotional, and fragrant experience, all within the confines of paper pages. We wanted the viewer to smell the dahlias one more time.

Throughout the process, I served many roles in the book's creation: copy editor, creative director, curator, print specialist, graphic designer, but most importantly the grandson and son of florists. Having grown up filling water tubes and trimming stems, I was able to connect personally with the subject and create what I believe to be my best piece to date.

From the beginning, I helped Heather to curate the photography and place the photos in a structure and hierarchy that helped the user to understand their artistic journey. Every design instance was chosen carefully and with purpose. We selected uncoated paper, made in Michigan by French Paper Company, for it's shared geographic heritage. We opted to print the book in the United States as the book promoted using flowers grown in the United States. We chose colors and typography that highlighted the past and a beautiful future.

In the end, the book was very well received. Recipients of the book included Barak and Michelle Obama, Martha Stewart, Gary Baseman, Debra Prinzing, and countless others. The book currently dons the shelves of Martha Stewart and Snoop Dog's show Potluck Dinner Party
